De La Salle is only one of five high schools in the state offering dual-enrollment math courses through Louisiana State University.  Math Lead Teacher Hussein Dossaji took a three-week course to prepare to teach MATH 1021 (College Algebra) and MATH 1022 (College Trigonometry).  Students who are enrolled can receive up to six college credits for the two LSU classes.

For this first year, 17 De La Salle students are enrolled in the class.  In order to qualify for the class, they must have scored a 19 on the math section of the ACT test and have a composite score of at least 18.  Students have 40% lecture and 60% on-line lab time in order to receive the credit.

Among the students taking the class, there is a mix of those who are taking the class for LSU credit, and a few who simply want the experience while still in high school.  Hannah Johnson Wilson said, “I am taking it now so when I go to college, I will have two maths already and can concentrate more on my major, nursing.”  Alex Costelloe said, “I am taking it for credit because I plan to attend LSU.  The class is challenging, and I enjoy being challenged in class.”

Mallory Hefner is not taking it for college credit, but believes it will help her to be more prepared for college-style teaching and course demands.  Scott Lauland, who is also not taking it for credit, said “I’m taking it as an elective, but it can’t help but benefit me.”  Scott added, “I have some friends taking this same course at LSU, and I’m the one tutoring them!”

All of the students credit Dossaji for being part of the reason they’re taking the course because, “he explains things so well.”

As De La Salle College Counselor Kerri Tedesco said, “The benefits of offering the courses to juniors and seniors in high school is that they can earn college credits, help them financially, and they can receive more teacher support than they would experience in a traditional college classroom, especially under the tutelage of Mr. Dossaji.”
