Crescent City Sports Rivalry Series has pair of district showdowns this weekend live on CST

NEW ORLEANS – The Crescent City Sports Rivalry Series doubles down this week with a pair of district championships on the line.

On Friday night at Tulane University’s Yulman Stadium, District 10-3A unbeatens St. Charles Catholic and De La Salle face off, and on Saturday afternoon at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie, District 9-5A rivals John Curtis Christian and Archbishop Rummel meet.

Air time for the St. Charles Catholic-De La Salle matchup is 7 p.m. Friday, with coverage of the John Curtis-Rummel showdown beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday. Ken Berthelot and Wayde Keiser will describe the action for both games.

All four teams head into Week 9 of the regular season undefeated in district play.

De La Salle (5-2, 3-0), which sits at No. 5 in the Crescent City Sports Class 3A rankings, returns to Yulman Stadium for the first time since its Division II semifinal victory over St. Thomas More last November, punching the Cavaliers’ first ticket to a state championship game in more than a half-century.

St. Charles Catholic (5-3, 3-0), which played for a state title in 2016, is looking to hand De La Salle its first district loss since 2015.

On Saturday, John Curtis (8-0, 4-0) and Rummel (7-1, 4-0) meet for the sixth time in four seasons. The winner of the regular-season game between the Patriots and Raiders has gone on to claim the outright Catholic League title each of the last three years.

Curtis is No. 1 and Rummel is ninth in the CCS Class 5A rankings, and both are looking to secure first-round byes in the Division I playoffs.

In addition to the on-field matchup, the coaches bring a historic perspective to the game. Patriots coach J.T. Curtis and Raiders coach Jay Roth have combined for 804 career victories, the most combined wins heading into a game in Louisiana high school football history. Curtis’ 578 wins in 50 seasons are the second-most ever at any level of football, while Roth has won 226 games in 24 years.
