Letter from the Principal

September, 2016

Dear Parents:

Happy September to all!  I sincerely hope that you and your child are quickly settling in to the routine of the new school year.  We are three weeks in at this point, and our calendar is filling up with events and happenings.

DONATION OF SUPPLIES FOR THOSE IN NEED

Thanks to the generosity of a De La Salle senior parent, we are sending a U-Haul truck to Baton Rouge with necessary supplies for those in need due to the August flooding.   A sincere “thank you” to all who have given.  We have decided to continue collecting through Thursday, September 8th, so if you have not yet donated, please do!!  Drop-off is in our cafeteria.

MARCH FOR LIFE MEETING, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH, 6:00 PM

For those students interested in attending the March for Life Pilgrimage January 24 through January 29, 2017, in Washington, D.C., there will be a meeting on Wednesday, September 7, in the Library beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Mr. Giambelluca will host the meeting, and he will be going on the trip as a chaperone.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE, THURSDAY, SEPT 15TH, 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM

We will have our first semester Parent-Teacher Conferences this evening.  We encourage all parents to come to campus on this night for individual conferences with teachers.  Conferences begin at 4:00 pm and end promptly at 7:00 pm.  We ask that you limit your individual time with teachers to a maximum of eight (8) minutes, and please be conscious of time if a line has formed outside a teacher’s door.  Of course, if you feel like you need more time with a teacher, you are always welcome to set up a conference by appointment with that teacher for another day.

HOMECOMING WEEK, SEPTEMBER 26TH – OCTOBER 1ST

Homecoming Week is just around the corner.  This week of school features a number of special “dress-down” days, as well as lunch-time and after-school contests and games.  The week ends with our football game against McMain at Pan American Stadium on Friday, September 30th, at 7:00 pm, and our Homecoming Dance on October 1st at the Lakefront Airport.  Please check our website and edline for more details as we near this week of school.

RETREAT DATES FOR ALL GRADE LEVELS

All De La Salle students must attend the mandatory grade-level retreat offered for their respective grades.  Information will either be mailed home or sent home with the student.  Below are our retreat dates for each grade level (please note that some retreats are conducted during school hours and some are not).

  • 8th grade: Saturday, October 15: 8:00 am – 12:00 pm on the De La Salle campus
  • 9th grade: Friday, December 9: during school hours (off-campus)
  • 10th grade: Friday, January 27: during school hours (off-campus)
  • 11th grade: Fridays, Oct. 28, March 10, & April 7:   twilight retreats (off-campus)
(Each junior must attend on one of these dates.  The junior retreat is on the campus of Loyola and runs from 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Friday nights.  A letter will be sent home next week explaining our procedures for this retreat).
  • 12th grade: Friday, October 7:  during school hours (off-campus)

I AM MALALA ASSESSMENT AND ACTIVITIES

Our One Book for Justice team is preparing a fall activity associated with our book, I Am Malala, and the student assessment on this work will likely be pushed to the spring semester.  Students will be alerted well in advance of the nature of the assessment and given ample time to prepare.  More on this as dates are finalized.

PRINCIPAL’S ASSEMBLY, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4TH

Also, in early October, we will hold our next Principal’s Assembly of the year, wherein we recognize truly outstanding achievements by our students both at and outside De La Salle.  If you would like your child recognized for any outstanding achievement that occurred outside of De La Salle (any special accolade that we would not necessarily be aware of), please email me with the details of the achievement, and I will work to include this recognition in our assembly.  (Because we are limited by time at these assemblies, I cannot guarantee all students will be recognized; however, any student who is not recognized at the assembly will be recognized on the next day’s morning announcements).

FRIENDLY REMINDER:  PLEASE SCHEDULE ALL APPOINTMENTS

As a friendly reminder, and as a means of saving you time and energy, all requests for appointments with teachers and administrators must be scheduled in advance.  Our handbook clearly states this policy, and it allows us to provide you with the necessary time to properly discuss the important issue at hand.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Our football, volleyball, cross-country, and swim teams are in full swing!  Please come out and support our students as they represent De La Salle on the field, on the floor, and in the water!  Also, please don’t forget we host the best post-game tailgating and celebration in town after every football game right here on campus.  All are welcome to join in these festivities!

As always, we thank you for entrusting your children to us, and we look forward to a productive and exciting September.

Take care, and may God bless you and yours.

Sincerely,

paulsig
