DLS Chess team takes 1st in Susan Polgar National Open

Four members of the DLS Chess team took 1st place in the Susan Polgar National Open at the Holiday Inn in New Orleans. They finished 3 ½ points ahead of the Chess Academy of Texas. Runnels High School of Baton Rouge finished in 3rd place.

Team members included brothers Larry, Thomas, and Louis Sivori and Kelten Gonzales.

Eighth grader Louis Sivori finished 3rd Overall behind two expert players, one from Canada and one from New York.

Junior Tom Sivori finished 8th, eighth grader Kelten Gonzales finished 9th and senior Larry Sivori rounded out the boys’ team in 10th.

In the girls’ division, freshman Theresa Sivori (sister to the three Sivori brothers) finished in 8th place.

The Cavalier Chess team is coached by David Pierson.

In December, the Chess team took 1st place in the New Orleans Open. Tom Sivori finished in a first-place tie for individual honors, but came 2nd in tie-breaker competition. Larry Sivori placed 3rd, and eighth graders Kelten Gonzales and Louis Sivori each took two wins in the tournament. Theresa Sivori had one win and one tie in the one-day event.
