De La Salle High held Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New Orleans by NOLA.COM

De La Salle High School in New Orleans recently honored nine athletes or supporters of the sports program during its 15th annual Sports Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. Additionally, the 50-year ’64 state baseball championship team and the 25-year district track team members and coaches were honored, as well as this year’s state runners-up wrestling team.

The evening began with the introduction of members of the state runners-up wrestling team coaches Jacob Karl and Rod Cusachs and their two senior state champions – three-time state champion Alex Martin (160 lbs.), and first-year champion Logan Sylve (170 lbs).

Following, members of the 50th anniversary baseball team who were in attendance were honored with special certificates, including Mark Comarda, Terry Hebert, Pat Morris and manager Marion Bonura.

From the school’s first district track champions, Coach Don Wattigny and distance runner Matt Shuler were honored.

Jason Galjour (’96) received the Warren F. Caire, AFSC, Wrestling Award.

The Brother Ambrose LeBlanc, FSC, Community Service to Sports award went to Don Maestri (’64) for his outstanding job as basketball coach at Holy Cross High School in the 70’s, and college coaching at Troy State in Alabama.

The Servus Fidelis Award went to Joseph Paterenostro (’56), a former Cavalier football player who has given back to the football team for years.

Honored for their sports achievements were Phil Nicaud (’68) – football and wrestling, Tim Scanlan (’70) – wrestling, Matt Shuler (’90) – school record holder in 3-mile Cross Country and 1600-m and 3200-m in Track, Kim Janes representing her son Chris Horton (’03) – football and track, Raymond Ronquillo Jr. (’56) – Football and Track, and his son Raymond Ronquillo III (’86) – Football, Track, and Basketball, and Lauren Hill (’02) – Basketball.

Athletic Director Tony Bonura was master of ceremonies. Kathleen Calder, Hall of Fame organizer and secretary, organized the event.
